


So, because you firmly believe (really, it's not even a belief system anymore, it's so deep it's just common "knowledge") that you live in the land of the free and the home of the brave, and because you "know" that this land of the free and home of the brave is operated by laws that the people vote for and which brave men and women fight to uphold, then when you see someone shot dead in the streets for no reason whatsoever, you HAVE to say, "Well, they must have done something that I didn't see," or, "Well, that's really unfortunate. When you watch any sporting even, and we watch a lot, and you hear, "O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave," and millions and millions of people are singing it, and your parents are singing it, you think to yourself, "That's reality." And when you see unarmed people murdered in the streets on television, you have to fit that into your reality.

The trouble we face.is that when you are raised for 13 years reciting, "I pledge allegiance." you can't help but believe everything you say.
